What to Know Before You Replace Your Furnace

If your Peoria home has an older system, the next heating season could be your furnace’s last. Give yourself time to make an informed decision about what you’re going to replace it with before it breaks down. Here are some key questions to ask about your existing furnace.

How Old Is Your Furnace?

A gas furnace more than 15 years old is past the average lifespan. The costs to replace major components when they fail (like heat exchangers) are going to outstrip the cost of a new unit.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: if the cost of service and parts is more than 40 percent of the cost to replace the unit, it’s time to replace it!

How Safe Is It?

As a furnace ages, components age and require repair, and the unit doesn’t burn fuel as efficiently as it once did. Natural gas and oil furnaces have the potential to produce deadly carbon monoxide.

How Efficient Is It?

The annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) is the percentage of fuel that produces heat for your comfort versus heat loss up the chimney. Older furnaces can have an AFUE of less than 75 percent.

The AFUE of new, high-efficiency gas-fired furnaces starts at 90 percent. An ENERGY STAR® gas-fired furnace is tops in its class, with an AFUE of at least 95 percent.

If the existing furnace was in place when you purchased the house or building, you may not know how old it actually is. The manufacturer’s serial number is on the furnace cover or the combustion chamber door. Contact the manufacturer with that number to find out when the unit was built.

Updating Your Furnace

Choosing the right high-efficiency furnace is key when you improve your heating system because you’ll be more comfortable and save on your energy bill as well!

Take advantage of our free in-home consultation and estimating service. Let our expert team help you choose the right high-efficiency ENERGY STAR® Carrier furnace for your Pekin or Bloomington home. Our Carrier product line includes advanced technology such as two-stage and modulating furnaces, which save energy by adjusting heat output for optimal home comfort.

Energy efficiency improvements to your Morton home can also save you money when you replace your boiler. FAQs

SHOULD I REPAIR OR REPLACE MY FURNACE?

When your furnace starts to act up, you will likely need a repair. However, sometimes the repair costs the same amount as a replacement, so replacing the furnace may be a better option. Our experienced heating specialists can evaluate your furnace to determine what’s wrong and what needs to be repaired. If they think a replacement might be more cost-effective, they’ll let you know.

HOW CAN I PREVENT SMALL REPAIRS FROM BECOMING BIG REPAIRS?

Staying on top of maintenance and repairs can extend the lifespan of your furnace. If you have a furnace that always needs repairs, our heating specialists can evaluate the problem to see if it’s an indicator of a larger issue. Also, regular maintenance will keep your furnace clean and efficient and may prevent repairs from being needed at all!

HOW DO I KNOW MY FURNACE NEEDS REPAIRING?

One of the most prominent signs your furnace needs repairing is when it’s not giving you the warm air you need. If your furnace isn’t blowing warm air, you may need to repair or replace your air filters, circuit breaker, heating unit, or thermostat. Loud noises like whistling, rattling, banging, and squeaking are abnormal and should be addressed. If your system is frequently cycling on and off on its own, you could have an airflow problem. On the other hand, if your system is continuously running, your unit may not be running as efficiently as it could be.
